According to their website, an average of 40,000 people visit Foxwoods every day. By comparison, the Pentagon occupies 3.7 million square feet. Today, Foxwoods employs 10,000 people and occupies 4.7 million square feet. In 2008 the MGM Grand at Foxwoods was opened. Expansions continued, slot machines were added in 1993, and a poker room in 1995. Growing success at the bingo operation eventually led to the construction and opening of the Foxwoods casino, with table games, in 1992. The Mashantucket Pequot Bingo Hall opened on July 5, 1986. Tribal members who were not living on the reservation began moving back to reclaim the land, and the tribe was granted federal recognition in 1983.
In 1973, the only Pequot member still living in the area died. In the early 1600s the tribe had approximately 8,000 members, but the Pequot War from 1636 to 1638 nearly wiped out the entire tribe.
